Demonstration of Microwave Generation from a Static Field by a Relativistic Ionization Front in a Capacitor Array.

چکیده
We present the results of a proof-of-principle experiment to demonstrate the generation of tunable radiation from a laser-ionized gas-filled capacitor array. This scheme directly converts a static electric field of wave number k0 into coherent radiation pulses of frequency v2 py2k0c, where vp is the plasma frequency. The radiation frequency can be tuned by varying gas pressure and/or capacitor spacing. In this experiment, well-polarized, short (less than 5 ns) microwave pulses have been generated over a frequency range of 6 to 21 GHz. The frequency of the detected signal, as measured with cutoff waveguides, scales linearly with the plasma density, and the relative power of the signal scales quadratically with the dc bias voltage in agreement with the theory. Generation of microwave pulses from the static electric field of a capacitor array by an underdense, relativistic ionization front*
The dc to ac radiation converter is a new device in which a relativistic ionization front directly converts the static electric field of an array of alternatively biased capacitors into a pulse of tunable radiation. In a proof-of-principle experiment frequencies between 6 and 21 GHz were generated with plasma densities in the 10 cm range and a capacitor period 2d59.4 cm. In the present experime...
متن کاملQq-5 Generation of Highly Tunable Microwave Radiation via a Relativistic Ionization Front
This paper reports the experimental demonstration of frequency upshifting of microwave radiation by a relativistic ionization front. Source radiation at 34.8 GHz has been upshifted to greater than 116 GHz in a continuously tunable fashion. It is a new technique for generating high-power, tunable radiation in short pulses, and has potential applications in plasma diagnostics, time-resolved micro...
متن کاملDemonstration of Submillimeter Radiation Generation from Static Field by Superluminous Ionization Front in Semiconductor Capacitor Array
Generation of frequency upshifted monochromatic radiation in the 100 GHz to FIR range by the interaction of a superluminous photoconducting front with an electrostatic “frozen wave” configuration in a semiconductor is reported. The interaction converts the energy contained in the “frozen wave” into monochromatic radiation, whose frequency depends on the energy in the laser pulse creating the su...

One of the interesting Laser-Plasma phenomena, when the laser power is high and ultra intense, is the generation of large amplitude plasma waves (Wakefield) and electron acceleration. An intense electromagnetic laser pulse can create plasma oscillations through the action of the nonlinear pondermotive force. electrons trapped in the wake can be accelerated to high energies, more than 1 TW. Of t...
متن کاملHigh power radiation from ionization fronts in a static electric field in a waveguide
The radiation produced when a relativistically moving plasma/gas boundary ~i.e., an ionization front! passes between alternatively biased capacitor electrodes is studied. Results of an experiment based on a design which incorporates the capacitor electrodes into an X band waveguide are presented. The waveguided design effectively couples nearly three orders of magnitude more power into the outp...
